Timothy App
Timothy App received a BFA from Kent State University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. He has taught painting and drawing at MICA since 1990 at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2008, he was named the Interim Director of the Hoffberger School of Painting, a graduate studio program devoted to painting, and served in that capacity through Spring of 2010. Prior to teaching at MICA Timothy taught at Pomona College and University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Since 1968, Timothy has remained active in the studio and in the art world, with 20 one-person and 5 two-person exhibitions, as well as over 200 group shows. He has exhibited his work regionally, nationally and abroad. In 1988, his work was the focus of a 20-year survey exhibition accompanied by a catalog. He is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in painting and an individual artist's grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. His work is included in many private and public collections, including 11 museums of art. Two of Timothy's paintings were part of the Art for Embassies program through the Department of State and exhibited in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina from 2005 to 2007. His work was chosen for the 185th Annual Invitational Exhibition at the National Academy of Design in New York. In 2013, a forty-five year retrospective was held at American University's Katzen Art Center in Washington, DC. During his time at MICA, Timothy has twice received the Trustee's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and has been nominated for the Richard C. Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship at the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition to his painting and teaching, he has written on the work of other artists, lectured on his own work, juried many shows, and curated exhibitions of abstract painting.
